Walter's Walk Coffee House Concert Series, St. Louis, Mo

Jane Godfrey writes and performs from some place deep within herself. What's clear during her performances is that she cares deeply for those who sit down to listen to her. She brings to her concerts a lifetime of family tales and experiences, stories brought to life in ways that allow the audience to join her around a metaphorical campfire or dining room table. There is truth and beauty in her songs, and she has a well-honed ability to pull on her listeners' heartstrings with one song and follow it quickly with something that finds its way directly to their funny bones. Like the musician herself, her songs are authentic, passionate and wise.

Singer-Songwriter

“Godfrey's gift as a songwriter lies in being able to put a subtle twist on ordinary things.  She sings of motherhood, characters stuck in mundane jobs, and self-acceptance with so much attention to detail that the lyrics often stumble upon clever truths that should only be evident to the characters themselves.  In "Donuts and Daydreams" the beehive-haired owner of a donut shop ultimately walks away from her life "to fill the hole inside".  In one of the CD's high points, "Stuff" she complains of the clutter in her life:

"I needed all this to function, I was dying of consumption".  This leads to a massive purge, her liberation and a road trip, only to discover that she can't travel until her Ford Explorer is full of snack foods, maps, CDs, sunglasses, air freshener, a cooler of soda, and "a heated cushion for my rear".  Throughout the CD Godfrey's crystal clear falsetto voice floats, dips and glides above the acoustic guitars, mandolins and accordions that provide some solid earth on which she occasionally lands.  "Choose Beauty", as the title suggests, persuades us beautifully (and with some self-deprecating humor) that life is really a matter one's outlook on it.”

What I'm Up To

I am looking forward to my upcoming travels!  First, I'm heading to Chicago to participate in Sue Fink's Musical Mondays series at Uncommon Ground.  I'll be in the round with Sue Fink, Robin Bienemann, and Charles Murphy...no doubt we'll have a lot of laughs as well as put our hearts on the line in song.  After that, Sue and I will hit the road again - a little follow-up after our "Ya Just Never Know" tour last summer. (Read all about those adventures here: https://yajust.wordpress.com/   We're going to Tulsa and Dallas to perform in a couple of house concerts. Can't wait!

My big family show is coming up.  This project has been in production in my mind for years, but it wasn't until last summer when I found the right venue (1900 Park) that it started to become a reality.  I'll be performing with my siblings and extended family members in a family-themed concert.  Two of my sisters are artists and their amazingly beautiful artworks (also family-themed) will be hanging in the gallery where we will be performing.  More on this later.
